6 Ways To Cope With Loneliness

There’s a huge difference between being alone, and feeling lonely. Oftentimes we wish for the presence of other people when we’re feeling sad and down. These feelings are normal. One way we can work through these feelings is by accepting them, and learning to enjoy our own company. This can greatly reduce anxiety, stress and depression. 

Below are six tips on connecting with yourself and feeling less lonely:

  1. Find a hobby you love. And I mean, REALLY love.

One that helps you take your mind off any anxiety, depressed feelings or difficult moments. DIY projects such as a DIY cafe, reading a good book, scrapbooking, photography…. Check out this article for more ideas! 

2. Take a walk and connect with gratitude.

Get out of the house! Even if it’s for 5-10 minutes. Stepping outside and getting fresh air can greatly improve your mood and prevent depression feelings from creeping in. 

3. Decorate your space so it screams “you”!

It’s time to paint that wall. Buy that desk. Splurge on new throw pillows. Have you ever wanted to paint your wall yellow? Do it! It’s your space, and you can take pride in knowing everything you’re doing with it is for you. Don’t forget to make it cozy! 

4. Find a local community and your “people”.

We as human beings are social creatures. We need connection. Volunteer at a local shelter or community center. Garden with your neighbors. Join a biking or hiking club. Find like-minded people to share your hobbies with. You never know who you’ll meet! 

5. Make a place, “your” place. 

A coffee shop, book store, your local nail salon, library, grocery store…. Whatever your “spot” is, make it regular, go there often and get to know the people who work there.

6. Journal, journal journal. 

There is one person who will always be there for you…and that person is YOU. Get to know who you are. The best way could be writing to yourself as if you were writing to a friend. You might be your bestest friend yet!
